CBD Oil For Skincare & Acne Prevention

One of the biggest trends in the beauty industry in the last year has been CBD oil-infused products, like the Milk Makeup Kush Mascara, or Kiehl’s Cannabis Seed Oil. According to Jefferies, this niche in the beauty industry is projected to reach a booming $25 billion in value in the next decade.

CBD is definitely the hot ingredient of the year – it’s everywhere: in cleansers, moisturizers, serums, anti-aging creams, and topical pain relievers.

One of the reasons why CBD’s booming in this industry is because of its antioxidants, who fight free radicals and oxidative stress, which is believed to speed up the aging process by damaging the structure and functioning of skin cells.

Also, it is believed that using CBD oil orally and topically can help improve acne and keep skin feeling youthful and moisturized.

Anti-inflammatory benefits
CBD oil is proved to have anti-inflammatory purposes, which can reduce skin inflammations in form of acne, rosacea, breakouts, and aging. Yes, aging is also a kind of inflammation.

“Perhaps the most promising role for cannabinoids is the treatment of itch,” said the study’s senior author Dr. Robert Dellavalle, MD, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

He noted that in one study, eight of the 21 patients who applied a cannabinoid cream twice a day for three weeks completely eliminated severe itching or pruritus. The drug may have reduced the dry skin that gave rise to the itch.

CBD also regulates the immune system’s production of cytokines.
We’ve already talked in detail how CBD interacts with systems of organs in the human body here.

But in short, cytokines are proteins responsible for causing the initiation of inflammation throughout the body. Cannabinoids appear to regulate the way in which cytokines are produced and inhibit the immune system from overproducing them.

What does happen when CBD comes in contact with our body? It interacts with TRPV1 and endocannabinoid receptors – where the TRPV1, also known as vanilloid receptor, has an important role in regulating many skin processes, like itching and pain.

On the other hand, endocannabinoid receptors as a part of ECS regulate the oil production of the skin, by balancing out lazy and overly active cannabinoids.

Best Overall Skin Health: Joy Organics

Just as a reminder, the endocannabinoid system or ECS plays a key role in building and maintaining optimal human health. It is different from many of the other systems in the body since it exists within all of the other systems. For this reason, it is also known as a “meta-system” which interacts with other bodily systems while also governing them.

Skin Health
But let’s focus on the skin for now – Abnormally dry skin could be a reason for lazy CB2 receptors, which are not active enough, whereas really oily skin could be a showcase of overly active CB1 receptors. Besides soothing and hydrating the skin, CBD oil balances these receptors skillfully and makes skin clearer and glowing.

Having this in mind, adding CBD oil to face serums or moisturizers really helps protect the skin because it attaches to cannabinoid receptors on the sebaceous glands on the skin. This process is the reason why CBD makes up for such an amazing acne treatment.

Humans don’t have fur and the body is finding ways to protect the skin – the largest organ of the body. It is our lack of fur that is responsible for acne struggles, making us the only animal with this kind of issue.

Sebaceous glands’ main task is to produce an oil called sebum. On delicate areas like the face – oil is produced more in order to protect it, hence so many face acne cases. When sebum is produced more, that is when breakouts happen.

CBD oil has managed to regulate the production of sebum and soothe inflammation
CBD oil is also a rich source of fatty acids and other nutrients that can be beneficial for glowing healthy skin.

Dr. Rachna Patel conducted research on her patients and came to the conclusion that when CBD is used topically – breakouts shrink, and redness is reduced. Even though topical application of any kind of product will always result in lower absorption compared to ingestion, acne becomes way smaller and less painful, over the course of a few weeks. Dr. Patel also suggests creating your own CBD anti-acne treatment by mixing CBD oil with coconut oil for dry, and rose water with CBD for oily skin and apply daily on affected areas daily.

The best way to apply is to clean and dry skin in gentle circular motions. A larger amount is okay is CBD is used as an ointment for chronic pain relief, but a little blob of oil or cream is enough for the whole face. It is absolutely safe for everyday use, but if you have extremely sensitive skin, start with a smaller dose and rarer application.

Another reason you should incorporate CBD oil in your daily skincare routine is the fact that it’s rich in vitamins A, C and E. Vitamin A stimulates the cells that produce the tissue keeping skin firm and healthy, vitamin C stimulates collagen production and reduces aging, while vitamin E blocks free radicals, also associated with reducing aging.

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains B Complex vitamins – thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, B6 and B12. (Vegetarians and vegans lookout – because CBD could replace this shortage in your diet). The use of CBD oil could also make up for insufficient amounts of iron, beta carotene, zinc, potassium, calcium, selenium and phosphorus, magnesium and manganese. Some of these elements are inevitable for healthy, glowing and clear skin.

This world of CBD beauty is relatively new and new products are being made every day.

The new study, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, concludes that pharmaceuticals containing cannabinoids may be effective against eczema, psoriasis, atopic and contact dermatitis as well. But, with more research results coming our way in the future, the information and benefits will definitely continue to represent themselves and make significant differences to many skin diseases and problems.
